Dismantling the Kitchen.

This weekend was a big push for the Meadow Vale house. Atom and I spent the weekend moving out of the kitchen completely and dismantling cabinets, trim, appliances and more flooring, while Emma rediscovered her love for oversized boxes and accessories.

Our amazing friends Nels & Rachel swooped in Saturday afternoon with beer in hand and helped with the satisfying kitchen demolition stage, a much needed boost. After a few attempts to remove the tile backsplash carefully, I took the advice of my cabinet contractor and cutout the wall.

We are preserving the cabinets from the upstairs kitchen to recycle into a mini downstairs kitchen, so the sledge hammers took a bit of a back seat this round.

Isn't it nice?

We did find a little monster hiding behind the mess, rotted subfloor from that piece of shit dishwasher. This reminded of the Ella house kitchen, only this time I don't feel as doomed. We will just have to pull all of the affected area and replace with new subfloor.

If you have never had the pleasure of pulling subfloor, or multiple layers of it, let me regale you of how much fun it is. Most sub floors have nails every 2-4 inches. If you are lucky, the nails or screws are not damaged or rusted out and will come up easily with a good crow bar. This is what is left AFTER the tile was chipped away.

This will definitely take the wind out of your progress sails, but if you want level solid flooring throughout your home, this step is a must. As you can see from the photo we have two more layers of it in the kitchen. Which is likely that each of these layers have their own set of nails or screws every four inches, this is how homes end up with 6 layers of subfloor [like our Ella house that was built in 1907 did].

Our entry way tile was hellish to remove and is what slowed down most of this weekend's progress, it came up in shattered unforgiving pieces. These are the moments Atom shines. He turns into a machine and presses through, the best thing I can do is offer him a cold beer and clean up the mess.

For now, Emma has come down with a fever and is home from school today. When she is sick, she is so sweet and cuddly, with a side of needy. I sit and write this as she sleeps next to me. When she got her first cold as a newborn I remember the only way she would be at peace is if I held her, all night long. This has been a trait she has never let go of, and since she is part wild animal, the only time I get unconditional cuddles.
